Gulf's Greyhound of the Week - August 8th

In the history of Gulf Greyhound Park, there is one resounding theme that has enabled greyhounds to be successful repeatedly, early box speed. More often than not, if a greyhound can win the race to the first turn, good things would happen. This week’s featured greyhound, Open Mind from High Star Kennel, possesses that much needed speed from the starting box and used it to her advantage winning twice to earn the honor as Greyhound of the Week.

After arriving here on the Texas Gulf Coast from Victoryland in Alabama back in April of this year, Open Mind adjusted to the tougher competition rather quickly moving up the grade ladder to grade AA in only eight starts. Times turned difficult for Open Mind as a two-month winless streak followed this success and Open Mind dropped back down in grade.

During this past week, Open Mind turned things around and showed off her skills going box to wire in a grade A race on Wednesday afternoon August 4. Time for celebration was short lived though because on Saturday evening, August 7, Open Mind drew in against a difficult field including grade AA winners C Ya Tom Collins, HG Tornado, MW Tremayne and Rough Hustle. The bettors showed little support for Open Mind allowing her to go off at odds of 10 to 1 but as the starting box opened, those fans were pleasantly rewarded as the white fawn 61 pound speedster from Lonesome Cry – B’s Just Do It jumped out to the early lead once again. As Open Mind was cruising on the lead headed down the backstretch, there were no challenges from the rest of the field and Open Mind would prove to be victorious for the second consecutive time winning by three ½ lengths in 30.11 seconds nearly achieving her best career running time.

Open Mind now as five wins out of 24 starts here at Gulf Greyhound Park. Congratulations to trainer Heather Currid from High Star Kennel and Open Mind for their achievements this week.
