This week, we are featuring BG Juju from High Star Kennel trained by Heather Currid as the Greyhound of the Week. The racing career of BG Juju started back in September of 2009 with some early success breaking his maiden in only his second official start. As the months progressed, BG Juju performed steadily in grades C through A winning a few races here and there but in April of 2010, BG Juju got hot and won three out of four races to finally achieve top grade AA. It would take until August 29 to finally break through and capture his first grade AA victory and it appears now that after tasting success, BG Juju has found the ability to become one of Gulf Greyhound Park’s successful greyhounds.
On Saturday afternoon September 11, BG Juju drew the perfect #1 post position to compliment his running style but faced a difficult challenge against a field including TNJ Jaws and C Ya Fuzzy Navel. After breaking from the 550-yard starting box in second place, BG Juju hugged the rail around the first turn behind leader Golddust Raul. As the race continued, BG Juju would take the lead at the top of the stretch and pull away to a 2-½-length victory in a time of 30.40 seconds as the slight 2 to 1 betting favorite.
After finishing second to last week’s Greyhound of the Week, Atascocita Peter, in his next start, BG Juju would look to return to his winning ways in the Saturday evening finale on September 25. This time, the deck was stacked against BG Juju drawing an outside #7 post position and racing against recent top grade winners DLT Diablo and Ask Me Now. BG Juju put things quickly to rest taking charge of the race from the get go and taking a two-length advantage. BG Juju would not be caught on this evening holding a safe advantage over TNJ Jaws and a late bid from Ask Me Now to win comfortably by four ½ lengths in a career best time of 29.98 seconds. BG Juju’s supporters were rewarded by a win ticket price of $22.40.
Congratulations to BG Juju (Flying Penske – Garden Grove) for this week’s accomplishments.
