As we get ready for the induction of Paul C. Hartwell and Gable Dodge into the Greyhound Hall of Fame on October 14th it occurred to us that this could be the beginning of a blog series.
This posting will be the first in a series on the different awards the greyhound industry bestows each year. To start things off here is a rundown of the awards.
History/founded: 1963
How Inducted: Greyhounds must be 8 years of age and retired for three years to be nominated for the Hall of Fame. This is an advanced age for many of the dogs and few are alive at the time of their induction.
When Inducted: New Hall of Fame members are enshrined each fall in Abilene. If living, the dogs maybe flown in for the ceremony. Video presentations of the dogs are shown.
History/founded: Gary Guccione started the Rural Rube and Flashy Sir Awards in 1971 when he first went to work for NGA (then called the NCA). It was designed to provide owners and breeders a voice in what greyhounds should receive national accolades and end-of-year honors. At the time, the only national honor was the All-American, voted on by the tracks. The awards are named after two of the initial greyhounds inducted into the Hall Of Fame.
How Nominated : The nominees are voted on by the NGA members and the subscribers to The Greyhound Review. Annually the NGA award the best sprinter in the country with the Rural Rube award and the best distance greyhound with the Flashy Sir award.
When Awarded: Early nominations for Flashy Sir Award is usually published in the January issue of The Greyhound Review. Final nominations are printed in February’s issue. Presentation of the award is at the spring meeting of the NGA.
