The distance racing at Gulf Greyhound Park continues to be ruled by this week’s Greyhound of the Week, Atascocita Vito, from Libby Racing Kennels trained by Frank Falco. Three weeks ago, we featured Atascocita Vito as he won two races in a row over the 660-yard course. Since that time, the winning streak has been extended to four in a row.Leading off the encore performance on Thursday September 23, Atascocita Vito drew a difficult #5 post position but the fans still made Atascocita Vito the 3/2 betting favorite. After fighting through some early traffic, Atascocita Vito worked his way up to third behind pacesetters Welcome Manny and Blue It and continued to stalk the leaders for most of the race.
By the time these three athletes reached the top of the stretch, they were three wide across the track and for a moment it appeared that Blue It was going to steal a hard earned victory but Atascocita Vito rushed up on the outside part of the track in the final moments to snatch the victory by a neck in a time of 37.49 seconds.
In the featured tenth race on Saturday evening October 2, Atascocita Vito headed to the 660-yard starting box as the unanimous crowd favorite at odds of 3/5 and would be breaking from a more favorable #7 post position. On this occasion, Atascocita Vito started much better this time racing behind the early speedster, Blue It, once again. Atascocita Vito spent most of the race just right of the shoulder of the frontrunner and as they turned for home, it appeared that Atascocita Vito gave the race away by swinging to the extreme outside portion of the racetrack. Atascocita Vito quickly accelerated to get to the wire by a narrow margin of ½ length in 37.16 seconds.
Atascocita Vito (Dodgem By Design – Atascocita Annie) now leads all greyhounds in purse earnings so far this year ($15,209) and is one win behind for the most wins this year (Vito – 15, Rough Hustle – 16).
