This week’s recipient of the Greyhound of the Week honors, BG Juju from High Star Kennel trained by Heather Currid and owned by Kenneth Larison, has established himself as one of the top greyhounds this year at Gulf Greyhound Park. The 69-pound, front running speedster has over overcome difficult post position draws leading to a three race win streak in top grade AA.
Kicking off the encore performance on Thursday, November 11, BG Juju drew the #5 post position against a field including recent top grade winner Good Is Gone and Hottie For Hire who was on a two race win streak of her own including peeling off a 29.89 second effort in her previous victory. As the 550-yard starting box opened, BG Juju sprung out on top establishing a quick two-length advantage ahead of his rivals. BG Juju would maintain this lead throughout the race holding off a very game Hottie For Hire, who was hot on his heels, and finish two lengths to the good in a time of 30.30 seconds as the 7/5 betting favorite.
It would be a quick turn around for BG Juju racing on Sunday afternoon November 14 in the featured tenth race. The post position draw was unkind once again as the yellow #6 blanket was reserved for BG Juju against another top field including Gable London, who has returned to top form winning in her last start and past top grade winners Tipp Cityboy, Nina’s Wagster and DLT Armageddon. BG Juju once again flashed her early box speed to establish her favored running style, in the front of the pack. Just when things looked as if it would be another easy victory, Gable London had something to say about that closing the gap on BG Juju with every stride. As the finish line approached, BG Juju’s lead diminished with each jump from the hard charging drive of Gable London, but BG Juju held on by a desperate nose in a blazing time of 29.99 seconds.
BG Juju would headline the sixth race Friday evening November 19 in the first half of the mandatory payout of the twin-trifecta facing the two greyhounds that gave her the strongest opposition lately, Gable London and Hottie for Hire. On paper, it appeared to be an excellent match-up of these talented greyhounds and the race did not disappoint the fans. BG Juju hit his break once again jumping out to the lead while Hottie For Hire moved into a good stalking position and Gable London was knocked out of it experiencing traffic problems. BG Juju continued to coast on the front end but had to hold off the late bid of Hottie For Hire once again to win for the third consecutive time in 30.17 seconds.
BG Juju (Flying Penske – Garden Grove) has been on fire since the end of July remaining in top grade AA while winning nine out of his 15 wins during this hot streak. Congratulations to the bunch at High Star Kennel and of course BG Juju for earning this week’s honors.
