Gulf Greyhound of the Week - Cry Homer

Cry One of Gulf Greyhound Park’s all time greatest greyhounds ever to set their paws on the oval, Cry Homer from LQK Kennels, Inc. trained by Cam Hawkins, stepped to the front of the line this week to earn the Greyhound of the Week honors. Cry Homer has spent most of his career racing against the toughest competition that the Gulf has to offer while remaining for the most part in top grade AA for over a year.

On Sunday November 21, the fifth race featured Cry Homer facing a field including other top grade winners Nina’s Wagster, C Ya Tom Collins and Nimby Tip. Cry Homer broke from the 550-yard starting box in post position #3 sitting just behind the leaders heading into the first turn, then barely cleared a traffic jam involving the frontrunners to take over the lead. At this point, the only question was the margin of victory, which in the end proved to be nine lengths as Cry Homer finished in a time of 30.05 seconds.
In Friday evening’s featured tenth race on November 26, Cry Homer’s rail running style would face a more difficult #7 post position versus several top contenders including Jedi Dangeranger, WWW Tight Wire, CL Staroftheweek and Nelly Nell. Cry Homer broke well once again and was positioned right behind race leader Jedi Dangeranger going around the first turn. The running order would not change down the backstretch and as the leaders reached the top of the stretch, Cry Homer said `enough is enough` accelerating into another gear to pull away from Jedi Dangeranger and the rest of the field by 4 ½ lengths in a time of 30.19 seconds as the 8/5 betting favorite.
Cry Homer (Gable Zydeco – Iza DC Classic) sits near the top of the 2010 wins list with 17 victories and over seventy-five percent in the money finishes. Cry Homer has also compiled an impressive career record of 102/31-17-11-11 for LQK Kennels, Inc. and looks for his third consecutive victory in the first race of the Thursday encore performance on December 2.
