3rd Round Fall Sprint Saturday, Sept 25, at Derby Lane

courtesy of NGA Review
by Vera Rasnake

The third round of the Fall Sprint proved racing is not cut and dry Saturday, Sept 25, at Derby Lane. Although beaten in round three Cal Holland Kennel’s Jack’s Shortfuse (Flying Stanley-Leta’s Shadow) tops the leader board for trainer Justin Holland with 34 points as she eyes the semifinal round on Wednesday. Also upset was the stakes favorite Flying Coal City, who is just behind Shortfuse with 33 points for the Barbara McAllister-trained male.

Before the night card the tri super was taken down in the matinee. The wager is placed in race five where one must pick the trifecta. A winning ticket gets you in to race seven where one selects the superfecta. One person picked correctly and won. The tri-super paid $51,492 for the 8-5-7 in race 5’s first half and the 6-2-3-1 combination in race 7.

Gulf's Greyhound of the Week - BG Juju

courtesy of Gulf Greyhound

This week, we are featuring BG Juju from High Star Kennel trained by Heather Currid as the Greyhound of the Week. The racing career of BG Juju started back in September of 2009 with some early success breaking his maiden in only his second official start. As the months progressed, BG Juju performed steadily in grades C through A winning a few races here and there but in April of 2010, BG Juju got hot and won three out of four races to finally achieve top grade AA. It would take until August 29 to finally break through and capture his first grade AA victory and it appears now that after tasting success, BG Juju has found the ability to become one of Gulf Greyhound Park’s successful greyhounds.

Can You Win At The Dog Track? Don't Bet On It Unless You Have Angle

by Eb Netr

Do you think that it's possible to predict the winner of a dog race? Well, a lot of people think so. In spite of the fact that dog track attendance has been declining, thousands of people still fill the stands every day, almost all of them trying to make money by picking winners.

Most of the bettors lose, mainly because they play lucky numbers or just pick at dog at random, because they like its name or its post position. The only people who make money at the track are the people who know the secret of picking winners.

The Rural Rube Award

by Eb Netr

 The Rural Rube Award

Ask almost anyone who won 2010 Horse of the Year and they'll probably be able to tell you that it was Rachel Alexandra. But if you ask most people who won the Rural Rube Award in 2010, I doubt that half of them know that it was Yahoo Omar from the Rader Kennel who just managed to edge out Gable's Sour Cream in votes. Greyhounds are sort of the "Rodney Dangerfields" of the racing world. They don't get the respect they deserve for their accomplishments, and even when they do get awards, the press and the public don't seem to notice like they should.

A Series on Greyhound Athlete Awards and their History

As we get ready for the induction of Paul C. Hartwell and Gable Dodge into the Greyhound Hall of Fame on October 14th it occurred to us that this could be the beginning of a blog series.
This posting will be the first in a series on the different awards the greyhound industry bestows each year. To start things off here is a rundown of the awards.

History/founded: 1963
How Inducted: Greyhounds must be 8 years of age and retired for three years to be nominated for the Hall of Fame. This is an advanced age for many of the dogs and few are alive at the time of their induction.
When Inducted: New Hall of Fame members are enshrined each fall in Abilene. If living, the dogs maybe flown in for the ceremony. Video presentations of the dogs are shown.

When trainer Sissy Sabell took over for the Big Water Kennel, she definitely faced a difficult challenge of turning the kennel in the right direction. Fortunately for her, there was a young superstar in the making, TNJ Jaws, who was ready to get back down to business and establish himself as one of the fastest greyhounds here at Gulf Greyhound Park.

NGA Review - Greyhound of the Month September

Greyhound of the Month
by Gary Guccione

WHERE'S BIG CASH

From March 20th up until July 16th there was no beating Where's Big Cash. The Everett Racing Kennel star ran up the longest winning streak of 2010 (thus far, at least) by notching 22 straight triumphs. Equally impressive: He did it at 3 different tracks.

KB’s Ruckus, Paddy Whacker

Wheeling and Jacksonville provided the stage for our two spotlighted stars this double-issue. But be sure to catch the tail-end of this column for an encore mention of two veteran champs whose pedigrees have been featured in past columns. TMC’s Remedy and Flying Coal City have carried on an incredible on-going duel, one of the very best in recent years.
