Gulf Greyhound of the Week - Cry Homer

One of Gulf Greyhound Park’s all time popular and fastest greyhounds, Cry Homer from LQK Kennels, Inc., trained by Cam Hawkins, earns the weekly honor as Greyhound of the Week. After reeling off a three race win streak in late November and early December, Cry Homer has become red hot once again through these chilly temperatures winning his last two races.

In Saturday evening’s finale on January 8, Cry Homer drew a favorable #2 post position against recent top grade winners Ask Me Win, Nina’s Fire Pen, and TNJ Wrangler. After studying the race, the fans made Cry Homer the heavy 3/5 post time favorite in this difficult field. Cry Homer broke out the of the 550-yard starting box on top which meant trouble for the rest of the greyhounds but Ask Me Win also showed her usual box speed to join Cry Homer around the first turn. As the leaders headed down the backstretch, Cry Homer held a one-length advantage over Ask Me Win but as the far turn approached, the margin continued to increase as Cry Homer pulled away from a very game Ask Me Win challenge. The flash of the blue #2 racing blanket was all alone down the homestretch as Cry Homer was flying home to win by 10 lengths in a blazing time of 29.70 seconds.
On Friday evening January 14, the featured tenth race highlighted Cry Homer looking for a repeat performance from the #2 post position versus a field including C Ya Salty Dog, KB’s Cigar Slam and a nice looking youngster from Gable Gulf Kennel, LLC, RJ’s Rochelle. Once again, Cry Homer broke very well but was outrushed to the first turn by RJ’s Rochelle, who took a one-length advantage around the turn. The running order did not change down the backstretch and around the far turn as RJ’s Rochelle continued to hold a stubborn one-length lead over the constant pressure of Cry Homer. Down the stretch they came and Cry Homer kicked it into another gear accelerating past RJ’s Rochelle near the wire to claim a one-length victory in another sub-30 second time of 29.93 seconds for his second consecutive win.
Cry Homer (Gable Zydeco – Iza DC Classic) now holds a very impressive career record of 111 starts with 34-19-13-11 and with the fact that Cry Homer just recently turned three years old, looks to be one of the top greyhounds at Gulf Greyhound Park for another season. Be here Thursday evening January 20 as Cry Homer looks to extend his winning streak to three in the 10th race.
