Puling Out Whacking Stick - 2011 Orange Park Derby

courtesy of Orange Park

The first round of the 2011 Orange Park Derby is in the books and no greyhound was more impressive in round 1 than previous puppy stakes winners, Paddy Whacker. Prior to this start, he had not won a race over 660 yards, but on this occasion, no one was going to deny him. What was the difference? He broke! Coming out that close to the lead, in the 9th race, he was destine to take home the top spot. Stalking early leader, Hallo My Pear, Paddy was right in contention and as they headed down the backside he took command and left the rest 5 lengths behind him at the finish line as he stopped the clock at 37.63 seconds. Third was Ubet I Win.

As expected, pre-race favorite, Kiowa Deli Dee started quickly from the starting box and was never really in question throughout in this effort. She cruised on the lead all the way to the finish line and was clear of the nearest competitor by almost 6 lengths. She stopped the clock at 37.80 seconds. Early threat Kanuka was second and the closing Make U Look was third.

Rebounding with a huge victory in the 13th race was Really Xtreme. After some rough trips over the distance, Xtreme found his break and was in control of this race from his very first step out of the starting box. He drove away from the field and was long gone early on, but one greyhound was not going to give up. La's Lucy put on a huge display, and even though she might not have won this race, she made it very interesting at the finish line. She trimmed the lead from about 8 lengths all the way down to a length and a half at the wire. A win is a win is a win, but watch out for Lucy in round two. Xtreme's brother Really Gonnarock was third.

Sayitwasseth's effort in the 15th race might have been the biggest surprise on the evening. So far he has looked ok over 660 yards, but in this race he was dominate. He exploded from the starting box and left the field in his wake throughout. He was NEVER challenged and crossed the finish line 4 lengths clear of the competition. He stopped the clock at 37.87 seconds. Chasing all the way to the wire for place was Fanatic Falcon and Kiowa Trent Tovi was a closing third.

The most determined effort of the evening award would have to go to Ethel's Pick in the 11th race. Pick didn't break all the well and found herself in trouble twice early on, but she didn't let it phase her. She put her head down and just kept on running and closing all the way to the stretch. There she put it in another gear and took down the leader before the wire for the win. Although it was a slim win, it was still impressive. Easi Erma took command early, left trouble behind, and was caught late for place. Akeem rounded out the trifecta.

Last but not least of our winners was Jt's Firstaround. He used a Beatles song to get him a victory in the 7th race. He did it, with a little help from his friends. Granted he ran a big race, and closed all the way from start to finish, but it really was Lorna's Cannon that gave him the victory. Rc Mini Power and Lorna's Cannon were on the lead from the start all the way to the stretch, but Cannon fired a late shot across the bow of Mini Power in the deep stretch and Firstaround seized the opportunity to take them both down before the finish line and steal away the win in 38.05 seconds. Mini power was second and Cannon was third.

Second round action takes place on Monday evening January 24th at the Orange Park Kennel Club. Six races of greyhounds returns and each will be looking to rack up some more points in hopes to move on in the Stakes.
