NGA News - It was a special Saturday evening on May 14, 2011 at Gulf Greyhound Park as Cry Homer of LQK Kennels, Inc. ran the race of his career to set the 550-yard track record at 29.42 seconds. It had been over two years since Gable Sour Cream of Gable Gulf Kennel, LLC recorded the fastest time ever on the Texas Gulf Coast with an amazing 29.43 second effort in which the chart comment read "smashed track record". For the longest time, many people thought that accomplishment would never be touched.
At the age of three, Cry Homer (Gable Zydeco – Iza DC Classic) continued to improve and get better as time rolled on. Before entering the race on May 14, Cry Homer had already recorded 14 wins out of 25 starts in 2011 quickly catching up to the 18 wins he earned in the previous year. Already a fan favorite for the hometown kennel of LQK Kennels, Inc., Cry Homer had established himself as the top greyhound at Gulf Greyhound Park before this monumental effort.
Heading into the final race on May 14, Cry Homer was on a three race winless streak after dominating the competition during the month of April with an impressive run of five victories including four sub-30 second times. In fact, Cry Homer came close on April 17 with a blazing time of 29.55 seconds winning by ten lengths from post position #2. Call it fate but Cry Homer drew the same #2 post for his record run on Saturday evening May 14.
As the 550-yard starting box opened, Cry Homer was in a three way battle for the lead but used the rail to his advantage to take command at the first turn. As track announcer John Paul Faour called the race stating that Cry Homer was "dominating the race", no one really knew what we had all witnessed until the final race time was posted on the tote board. The 13 length win resulted in the track record time of 29.42 seconds making Cry Homer the fastest greyhound to ever set their paws on the oval in La Marque, Texas.
Trained by Cam Hawkins and owned by Cameron Younts, this Hall of Fame greyhound has recorded the most wins ever at Gulf Greyhound Park with 49 as of June 11, 2011. Cry Homer's career record at the time of publishing is 139/49-24-16-11 and is the favorite heading into the $50,000 TGA Texas Round Up Sprint Championship beginning June 17.
