NGA News -- Field set for St Petersburg Derby; TMC’s Pistol fires off three in a row..

NGA News -- The field for the 85th annual St. Petersburg Derby was set after the June 22 semifinals. Capabal kennel’s OK Barry (Bouncing Bucky x Potrs Q Promise) at 25-1 scored an upset victory in semifinals for a guaranteed Derby slot. Capabal’s last Derby victory was in 2004 by PNJ’s Barr. OK Barry paid $56.20 to win over Flying Masago (McAllister) the bet favorite who finished second. Storm Rush (Royal Racing) and Magic Smoke (Abernathy) finished third and fourth filling the first half of the Derby field. Starz Brave One (Alderson), Hi Noon Maestro (Nova), Kentucky Fire (Cal Holland) and Strike It Up (Charter) will compete in the Derby Consolation.

McAllister kennel’s Flying Marvelous (Kiowa Sweet Trey x Flying Midnite) headed the back half of the Derby finalists. The sensational starter compiled her sixth win in just eight career starts. Dancin Rainman (Nova), USS Gazillionair (Raines) and Galway (D’Arcy) finalized the Derby field. Marvelous clocked a 37.43 to win in her box to wire win. Strike Out King (Charter), Magic Finch (Abernathy), Kiowa JSK Gustaf (Patriot) and Chugalugger (Magic City-Mighty Fine) will be featured in the Consolation Derby.

Post positions will be key in the two stakes. The races and posts will be drawn Thursday night and posted on Vera’s News on the Derby Lane home page.

Other news: Wednesday night’s (June 22) eleventh race was as powerful as a stakes race final. J. E. O’Donnell kennel’s TMC’s Pistol (Dodgem By Design x TMC’s Contessa) came out with guns loaded to halt the win streak of Backwood Shyster (Campbell) and score the top grade victory over the win leader Flyin Carnoustie (McAllister) and Capabal kennel’s Aerial Battle. Pistol also kept Sovereign Gold (D’Arcy) and Jack’s Non Stop (Holland) from scoring repeat wins.
