NGA News - Round 2, Bluffs Run's Juvenile Stakes

NGA News -  Slatex Kayser (Harlan Brothers) and Astarbeyondmagic (River Bluffs) took the lead after the second round of the $60,000 Juvenile Stakes at Bluffs Run on Saturday, June 4.

The pair has won in both rounds to earn the maximum of 30 points. Traditionally, it has taken 40 points to earn a berth in the championship race of a stakes at Bluffs Run.

Slatex Kayser went box-to-wire from the three box, pulling away nicely in the homestretch for a five-length win. Kayser moves into the quarterfinals with a 22-10-3-3 record.

Astarbeyondmagic went box-to-wire from the eight, exploding in the homestretch to expand his lead from two to seven lengths. Astarbeyondmagic advances with an 18-9-2-2 record.

A half-dozen greyhounds are in the thick of the chase with 25 points.

The track's victory leader, P's Gibbs (Petzold) put on a terrific homestretch show, coming from one and a half lengths off the pace in passing Slatex Vincent (Harlan Brothers). Once in front, Gibbs raced out to a seven length win. Gibbs is 26-16-2-4. Slatex Vincent, a first-round winner, is 23-5-5-2 with his second.

Hilltex Cool (Harlan Brothers) was a second-round winner and another greyhound that had a big homestretch push. Cool, 23-7-2-3, ran out to a seven and one-half length win, the biggest margin of victory in the second round.

Shadow Blend (Hardison) expanded a length's lead to six and a half in the homestretch in his win. Shadow Blend, 14-5-4-1, had the round's best time, 30.17 seconds for the 5/16-mile test.

Jet Force (Hardison) won by four lengths and moved to 22-6-6-3.

Call Me Peculiar (Hardison) got to 25 points with a second place finish. A 26-1 longshot despite a first-round win, Peculiar, 26-6-5-2, rallied from fifth to get to get her second.

Two greyhounds had second-round victories and sit with 23 points.

Pearls of Wisdom (Plum Creek), 22-4-4-3, opened the second round with a two-length win.

L's Zakarack (River Bluffs), 26-9-4-5, went box-to-wire to win by two and a half lengths.

After the second round, the field was cut in half to 48 greyhounds for the Wednesday, June 8, quarterfinals. There was a clean cut; a greyhound needed 12 points to make the quarterfinals and all of the greyhounds with 12 points got into the quarters.

After the quarterfinals, the field will be cut to 24 greyhounds for the Saturday, Jun 11, semifinals.
