NGA News - Marc Randle's Shanett, racing out of the Robert Thorne Kennel, took command early to win the $55,000 Southland 5/16 Derby on July 1.
A daughter of Rhythmless-Maybix, Shanett held off Radio Spirit by a length-and-a-half to win in 32.07. She paid $8.00, $3.60 and $3.20 across the board.
Radio Spirit, owned by Richard Armington, races for the Magic City Kennel. Running third was Michael Cassidy's Jack's Big Lad, out of the Legg Kennel.
Shanett's littermate brother, Taqzun, was fourth.
Favored TB's Final Stand, who last month won the Razorback and looked just as formidable in three of the four preliminary rounds of the Derby, ran into trouble and finished fifth. He's owned by Norman Rader and races for the Dorsey Kennel.
Rounding out the field were Trougelz (another Rhythmless pup owned by Randle), Ed Gardner's Turbo Lennie (tied for leading-point getter with Final Stand) and Ryan Farms' Madison Square.
The win boosted Shanett's record to a sparkling 17-4-1-1 in just 23 outings this year at Southland.
Keeper Spode (Bob's Skeet-Queenbee Episode), owned by Green Smith, won the Derby Consolation two races earlier for the T And T Kennel. Runnerup was Vince Berland's Tiger Boy, winner of the Hollywood World Classic earlier in the year. Third was David Blair's Bella Infrared.
