NGA - Flying Coal City Under Pressure

The fourth and final rounds of the Fall Sprint will be held Wednesday night September 28th. Abernathy kennel’s Magic Bagels was pulled from the race forcing a seven-dog field in the semifinal. Point leaders USS Gazillionair (Raines) and Craigie I Am Jak (Campbell) each with 40 points drew in the seven-dog field that also has the majority of the high point-getters. The sixth race not only features the top dogs; it also features the defending champion Flying Coal City (McAllister). Known, as "the coal train" McAllister’s defending champion will be under pressure to perform. Flying Coal City will enter the semifinals as the eighth highest in points with 26. He must turn in a stellar performance to defend his title on October 1. Five females and ten males will produce this year’s stakes finalists after the Wednesday night semifinals.

The sixth race features Capabal kennel’s top dog JW Titleist who is also Derby Lane’s current win leader for the meet. Titleist drew the rail post. Flying Coal City is next to him in post two. Coal was blocked on the inside causing him to finish last in round three. He will need to get out quickly and score high points in order to make the final. Hi Noon Rogue drew post three and will need a miracle against the strong late speedsters. St. Pete Derby Champion Storm Rush has scored second place in every qualifier. Another second cinches the final for the female who will be charging late wearing the green blanket. USS Gazillionair is already guaranteed a slot in the final, as he shares top points with Craigie I Am Jak. Each have 40 points, but unless they finish in a dead heat for the win, only one will take the top points in race six. Like Gazillionair, Craigie I Am Jak has won two of his qualifiers. Jak will break last and if true to form the 69 –pound male will give the fans a thrilling finish from post six. Sovereign Gold once again draws a favorable outside post. She put forth a winning effort in round three and although she is in with the late speedsters, Gold’s position is a good one, as she will outbreak many of her rivals that will put her in a good early position.

The tenth race could see a two-dog battle of the sexes between Aerial Battle and Sand Cloud. Aerial Battle’s 30.47 clocked in round one is the male’s fastest time since his return and the fastest winning time of the series thus far. The male will be the betting favorite from the outside eight. The fast-breaking female Sand Cloud is expected to match strides with Battle from Cloud’s four post. The are expected to go "paw to paw" early. AHK Colormegone won her second round from the same six box that she drew against the field in Wednesday’s race. Venus Espinosa and Kiowa Lazy Lazy would need a win to help their point totals, but even a win isn’t a guarantee for the males that sit with 13 and 12 points, respectively. Manicotti Manny should not be discounted from a favorable inside post. Manny could upset if the circumstances are right for him to break quickly from the two post. The last time M’s Glaze Fancy drew the rail post she scored the win. She will need much racing luck to avoid trouble early and she needs an upset win for a possible post in the final.
