Libby Racing Kennels and Atascocita Racing have a budding superstar on their hands in the form of Atascocita Dray earning this week’s Greyhound of the Week honors. In a period covering less than four months, this 73-pound front running speedball bred from Kiowa Sweet Trey and Atascocita Joyce has taken `the Gulf` by storm.
Atascocita Dray started his career on July 2 with a rough trip finishing third in his maiden debut but opened many eyes winning his next maiden outing by ten lengths. Proving that effort was not a fluke, Atascocita Dray went to the front once again winning a grade J contest by six lengths. The climb through the grading ranks continued with a second place then a grade C win respectively before departing the racing scene for over a month.
Upon his return to the racing oval here in La Marque, Texas, Atascocita Dray picked up right where he left off finishing second in grade B followed up by another front running victory on September 10. The competition of grade A made things difficult for Atascocita Dray only managing a third place finish in three starts but everything came together perfectly on September 30. Atascocita Dray posted the fastest time in his young career going box to wire in 29.89 seconds winning by nine lengths completing the journey to top grade AA.
The debut against Gulf Greyhound Park’s elite competition for Atascocita Dray proved to be successful repeating his previous effort in box to wire fashion winning by one length over Omar Dodger. Atascocita Dray continued to be in the hunt finishing second and third in his next two starts and has now started a two race win streak earning this week’s top honors.
On Wednesday afternoon October 19, Atascocita Dray drew the green blanketed #4 post facing the difficult challenge of facing a rejuvenated 550-yard track record holder Cry Homer and recent top grade winner Spry Derosa of K-Rod Kennel. Atascocita Dray put things quickly to rest by seizing early control of the race and held a safe distance over a game C Ya Foxy Roxy of LaRosa Enterprises winning by one length in a time of 30.43 seconds at a nice win ticket price of $15.00.
The next opportunity for Atascocita Dray fell on Saturday evening October 22 as the heavy race favorite going off at odds of 1/5 beginning from the very same #4 post position as before. It was de-ja-vu all over again as Atascocita Dray immediately took command of the race and was never challenged on his way to a five-length victory in a time of 30.20 seconds making it two consecutive top grade wins in a row.
Atascocita Dray has begun his career with an impressive start of 16/8-3-3-0 and will definitely be one of the greyhounds to watch at Gulf Greyhound Park. Congratulations to owner Atascocita Racing, the newly arrived trainer Cam Hawkins and of course to the star of the show, Atascocita Dray for this week’s accomplishments.
