Iowa Breeders Classic second round

At the halfway point in the qualifying for the 25th $500,000 Iowa Breeders Classic at Bluffs Run, the chase is tightly contested.

Five greyhounds lead the field with a perfect score of 30 points, thanks to wins in the first two rounds. A step behind with 25 points is seven greyhounds.


P’s Gibbs (Petzold) gave another impressive performance to lead the day. P’s Gibbs, the leading winner in the field with a 38-22-5-5 record, won his second straight race with an explosive homestretch run. Gibbs expanded a half-length lead to a final margin of seven and a half lengths. His winning time of 30.06 seconds for the 5/16 mile course was the fastest time for the round. P’s Gibbs is hot, winning five of his last six starts.

L’s Fray (Boeckenstedt) stayed hot, winning for the 11th time in her last 15 outings. L’s Fray pulled away, turning a length’s lead in the far turn into a six and a half length margin of victory. L’s Fray is 23-13-4-1.

Boeckenstedt has two other greyhounds perfect with 30 points. Boc’s Slim N Fit, 37-8-9-4, went box-to-wire from the two box to win by a length. Slim N Fit is hot, winning four of her last five starts. Boc’s Now U Don’t went box-to-wire from the four, pulling away for a four and a half lengths win. Boc’s Now U Don’t is 42-9-12-4.

Jet Force (Hardison) moved to 49-17-10-6 with a box-to-wire win from the one box. She won pulling away by four lengths.

Of the seven greyhounds with 25 points, two won in the second round. JD Imperium (Mickim), 35-8-10-5, exploded in the homestretch to win by eight lengths, the largest margin of victory in the second round. RJ’s Al (Bean & Stout), 31-8-5-5, came from second in the homestretch to down first-round winner Angel Tree (Blake & Black) by one and a half lengths. RJ’s Al has won three of four.

Also with 25 points are L’s Zakarack (Boeckenstedt), KB’s Tatanka (Bartley Corporation), two-time All Bluffs Run selection PG Tiger (Bean & Stout) and LT Candy Girl (Wilhite).

Not doing well are the three 2011 stakes winners in the field. Open Champion Boc’s Mc Dandy (Boeckenstedt) has worked to do with just 18 points. Juvenile Champion Astarbeyoundmagic (River Bluffs) is barely alive with 12 points. Eliminated with only six points is 3/8-Mile Derby Champion Jump N Jive (Plum Creek).

Four greyhounds tied with 11 points, the cutoff point for the quarterfinals, two made the cut for the quarterfinals thanks to second place finishes, they are Terrific Talent (Bartley Corporation) and KC First Of All (Bean & Stout).

The quarterfinals for the 48 remaining greyhounds are set for Wednesday, Oct. 26. Following the quarterfinals, the field will be cut to the top 24 point earners for the Saturday, Oct. 29 semifinals.
