It’s been a long time since a field this large has come together in the quest to be crowned the Long Distance Champ of Greyhound Racing. This Thursday evening, October 13, "Eighty" Greyhounds will take to the track in the opening round of the $50,000 Hecht Marathon Championship at Flagler Greyhound Track to challenge the 770 Course.
Ten different tracks from around the country are represented, and the big time closers over the shorter 3/8ths distance are looking to make their mark and take home the $20,000 Winner’s Purse.
It has been six years since pups last had their spin around the track chasing a Hecht Marathon Title and it comes at the perfect time for early Morning Line Favorite Slatex Cadillac from the WR Kennel. The Cadillac currently holds 4 different Season Best Times over two different race tracks at Naples-Ft Myers and Flagler. If Cadillac can turn in the fastest time this Thursday night, she will up her total to five including all three distances that will be run at Flagler this season.
The last three Hecht Marathon Titles were all taken home by the DQ Williams Kennel and there is no question the DQ crowd hopes to put another Trophy on the mantel. With over a dozen pups entered, including strong challengers Ah’s Sly and Casper Van Dien, DQ will provide plenty of competition for those that made the trek south to take on South Florida’s finest. Other fan favorites are Naples-Ft Myers Derby Champ Kiowa Starz Dean and Orange Park Track Record Holder Paddy Whacker.
There will be two qualifying rounds (Thursday Oct 13 and Sunday Oct 16) and two semifinal rounds (Thursday October 20 and Sunday October 23). The Championship Final will be run on Closing Night at Flagler, Sunday October 30th.
