It's Maria in World Classic
Pauline O'Donnell's Maria Mandalena came home with a rush to capture the 2012 World Classic Championship at Mardi Gras Friday night, Feb. 17.
The February 2010 daughter of Kiowa Myth-CDN Crazy To Go, racing from the 7 box, paid $12.60, $5.40 and $4.80 across the board.
Finishing second was Joe Trudden Kennel's M Cee Drive, owned by Trudden and Michael Frino. In third was the early-foot speed demon Who Says I Can't, owned and raced by D.Q. Williams.
Completing the Superfecta in fourth was Ed Gardner's Turbo Lennie, also racing from the Trudden Kennel.
Maria Mandalena had two wins and a second in her last three preliminary rounds going into the finals. She had the fastest time in the elimination races, with a 30.05 performance on Feb. 3. She's a littermate to Money Maid, who was one of two leading sales at the NGA Fall Meet, winning her main stake impressively and selling in the auction for $30,000.
The litter was raised by Doug and Lisa Riches of Canada and finished out in Kansas by Steve Sheaffer.
Maria Mandalena, besides being the only "foreign born" pup in the race, was also the only female in the Classic final.
More details on the stake will be carried next week and in the next Greyhound Review.
