Gulf Greyhound's Greyhound of the Week - Riley Jaymes

Riley Jaymes
Returning to the Greyhound of the Week honoree list for the second time in 2012, Riley Jaymes of Libby Racing Kennels put together two fantastic efforts this week to punch his ticket into this week’s spotlight. The 81-pound brindle male bred from Dominator -Struttin Carly and owned by Russ Mc Elhinny has experienced a long, successful career on the Texas Gulf Coast with a record of 138/37-19-15-13 over a two-year span.

A one-time competitor for the departed LQK Kennels, Inc., the familiar figure of trainer Cam Hawkins moved along with Riley Jaymes to run for Libby Racing Kennels. Since winning back-to-back grade AA races in late January of 2012 to earn the weekly honors for the first time, Riley Jaymes has remained in the Gulf’s top two grades of A and AA with a versatile running style of closing from the middle of the pack or occasionally rushing to the early lead.
The week started off with a `bang` on Sunday afternoon May 20 as Riley Jaymes broke the thirty-second barrier for the first time since May 30, 2011 winning a grade A contest by five lengths in a time of 29.99 seconds.

Following that rejuvenating effort, the next hurdle for Riley Jaymes was set for Friday evening May 25 facing a difficult grade AA field including recent winners Gable Raven of Bone Man Racing Kennel and Greek Boymaurice of D.Q. Williams Kennel. As the race began to take shape, Riley Jaymes was in the back of the pack but used a cagey veteran move along the rail in the first turn to slip by traffic and improve his position to third chasing race leader Greek Boymaurice and Bob’s Little of Currid Racing. The journey continued down the backstretch and the gap slowly narrowed until Riley Jaymes was right on the rear paws of the leaders at the top of the stretch. Greek Boymaurice hooked the rail while Bob’s Little swung to the outside portion of the racetrack so Riley Jaymes split the difference and got up in the final strides to win a head in a time of 30.43 seconds.
