Gulf Greyhounds Greyhound of the Week - Slatex Albany

Slatex Albany
For this week’s Greyhound of the Week discussion, we continue with the growing `youth movement` as Slatex Albany from Bone Man Racing Kennel takes center stage. The prefix `Slatex` is making a successful return from owners Harlan Brothers Kennel, Inc. as trainer John Mitcham, Jr. is reaping all of the rewards with several pups making a name for themselves.

The beginning of this three month journey for the 59-pound black daughter of Trent Lee – Slatex Isabell started with a bang on September 19 as Slatex Albany made an immediate splash by graduating from the maiden class in her first attempt after winning both of her previous two official schooling efforts. After falling down in her next outing, Slatex Albany rebounded nicely with consecutive front running victories in grades J and C.

The learning curve continued in grade B with back-to-back third place finishes followed by some bumps in the road before Slatex Albany re-visited the winner’s circle with another front running effort on October 21. The good vibes kept on rolling with a second place finish in grade A and then a box to wire triumph on November 1 to move into the elite competition of Gulf Greyhound Park’s top grade AA.

From that point forward, Slatex Albany has remained in grade AA finding good fortune in bunches during the span of nine starts with two separate winning streaks consisting of consecutive victories. The first of which occurred on November 18 as Slatex Albany won her first ever top grade contest and proved it was no fluke with a career best winning effort of 29.91 seconds on Thanksgiving night. The latest win string this past week to start the month of December paved the way for Slatex Albany to catch the spotlight of the weekly honors.

On Wednesday afternoon December 5, Slatex Albany clinched her third top grade AA victory in five starts in the thirteenth race finale. Despite starting from an unfavorable middle #5 post, Slatex Albany broke very well and positioned herself perfectly hot on the heels of leader Spry Cordero of K-Rod Kennel. Slatex Albany made her move at the top of the stretch circling around Spry Cordero to achieve the lead and drove home to the wire finishing two lengths ahead of the strong closing JD Rodger Dodger of K-Rod Kennel.

Saturday evening’s tenth race on December 8 would be the next opportunity for Slatex Albany to flash her skills beginning from a favorable outside #8 post position. As the slight post time favorite over Primed to Win of D.Q. Williams Kennel at odds of 7/5, Slatex Albany had a clear run to the first turn following early leader Sheriff Garcia of Sambade Racing, LLC. With a steady drive down the backstretch, Slatex Albany put her nose out front for good around the far turn and pulled away impressively to an eight-length romping victory to improve her career record to 20/9-2-3-0.
