Wheeling Panhandle Classic Wrap Up
Panhandle Classic Goes To KB’s Ruckus
Wheeling Downs sent out eight of the top sprinters on Saturday Matinee in quest of the Panhandle Classic and KB’s Ruckus was able to secure the victory for the Green Maupin Kennel.
Racing from the two box KB’s Ruckus sat on the rail for the whole trip and was able to outgame number six Flying Burgundy who set the pace on the midtrack. Number four Kiowa Mystic Bob had a very strong outing and if he didn’t slide wide at the first turn and encounter trouble he may well have been able to overtake the leaders.
Another great race from Wheeling Downs and as the summer heats up we can expect the racing to heat up also.

The Decline of Horse Racing by Bennett Liebman
We all know that horse racing is in decline. Thoroughbred racing declined nationally in handle by 7.3% in 2008, by 9.8% in 2009, and by 8.4% in the first four months of 2010. In New York State, total handle on horse racing fell by more than 10 percent in 2009. When you consider the changes in the consumer price index, New York racing handle is approximately 20 percent of what it was in 1974. What happened here? This article represents a subjective attempt to review what happened both in the nation and in New York State to bring about the fall from grace of the racing industry.

The Real Story Behind The Bid To End Greyhound Racing
We came across this interesting piece regarding the campaign against dog racing along with some supporting documentation - an excerpt:
"Watching this campaign to end dog racing evolve over the past several years I must admit to being totally fascinated and amused by it all but at this point the toll on innocent people has grown to unacceptable levels and I feel compelled to shed some light on the issue. This is not a new story and to gain the proper perspective on what is happening we must go back to the origins of this so called movement to save the greyhounds...." Read the article:

Gary Guccione on Horses vs Greyhounds
Different racing breeds
often face the same issues—
just maybe not at the same time….
By Gary Guccione
Greyhound Review May 2010
You’ve possibly heard this before, and if so, it just might have been in a previous column in this very same publication. (OK, it’s true: the older one gets, the more one repeats himself.)
“Keep one eye on the horse-racing industry,” our predecessor, the late Norman McAsey, used to tell this wet-behind-the-ears kid in the early ‘70s. “What goes on with the Thoroughbred business today will almost certainly be an issue we’ll be dealing with before very long.” Experience proved Mac’s axiom to be correct more often than not.

Gulf's Greyhound of the Week May 30th
courtesty of Gulf Greyhound
Our featured greyhound this week would be considered a surprise to some people but Doug’s Freida from Lingle Kennel has run three of the best races in her career defeating some of the fastest greyhounds that Gulf Greyhound Park has to offer over the past two weeks.
This recent win streak began on Thursday night May 20 as Doug’s Freida faced a difficult field composed of top grade winners It’s A Reality, Gable Teresa and Cry Parker. Doug’s Freida does her best running on the lead and on this night, the stars lined up perfectly as Doug’s Freida outran her rivals to the first turn taking a two-length advantage. Doug’s Freida would maintain her advantage crossing under the wire by a final margin of 3 ½ lengths in a time of 30.52 seconds and rewarding the fans with a $40.20 win ticket.
Things would not get any easier for this speedster out of Lonesome Cry – Madam Nifty as Doug’s Freida drew an unfavorable #5 post position on Sunday Matinee May 23. When the starting box opened, Doug’s Freida popped out to the lead like a bullet shot from a pistol quickly establishing a three-length advantage over the field. Doug’s Freida would not relinquish the lead breezing home to a four-length victory in 30.20 seconds.
Finally, on Saturday evening May 29, Doug’s Freida would be wearing the green #4 racing blanket facing another difficult challenge as recent grade AA winner Cry Parker was breaking just to her inside in the #3 post and recent Greyhound of the Week, C Ya Tom Collins, was in the #5 post. Doug’s Freida showed all of her heart and determination in this race by sliding through on the rail to pass race leader Magnolia Dream on the farturn and claim the win by two lengths in 30.16 seconds.
Congratulations to trainer Cherrye Davenport from Lingle Kennel and Doug’s Freida for an outstanding two weeks of racing.

Southland Razorback Championship Wrap Up
Stevie Pree Leads The Way At Southland In Razorback Championship
Southland showcased their best middle distance greyhounds Monday afternoon in the annual running of the Razorback Championship and Ed Mullen’s Stevie Pree led from wire to wire to win this year’s edition.
Stevie burst to a comfortable early lead and when the pack reached the escape turn it looked like a 550 race in that the field was closely bunched behind the lead dog. When the race jammed up behind him Stevie was off and gone and only needed to hold off the late advance of number one hound Starz Shetan. Stevie was the betting choice and returned a modest win price of $6.80 to his backers as he toured the Southland oval in a time of 37.39.
