The third round of the Fall Sprint proved racing is not cut and dry Saturday, Sept 25, at Derby Lane. Although beaten in round three Cal Holland Kennel’s Jack’s Shortfuse (Flying Stanley-Leta’s Shadow) tops the leader board for trainer Justin Holland with 34 points as she eyes the semifinal round on Wednesday. Also upset was the stakes favorite Flying Coal City, who is just behind Shortfuse with 33 points for the Barbara McAllister-trained male.
Before the night card the tri super was taken down in the matinee. The wager is placed in race five where one must pick the trifecta. A winning ticket gets you in to race seven where one selects the superfecta. One person picked correctly and won. The tri-super paid $51,492 for the 8-5-7 in race 5’s first half and the 6-2-3-1 combination in race 7.
Saturday night tremendous performances were seen in the two qualifiers that stopped the streaks of Jack’s Shortfuse and Flying Coal City. The first heat was held in race six that saw Abernathy Kennel’s Casino Zada (Lonesome Cry-Bow Hellbent) quickly take charge and hold on to the win. Vegas Rooster put forth a winning effort and came back at the end to finish second by a half-length. Kiowa Lazy Lazy was also rushing at the end for a close third. TMC’s Pistol completed the superfecta 8-4-6-1 that paid $1,272. Zada’s upset over Shortfuse paid $10.60, $7.60 and $5.40. Flying Bergen, Jack’s Shortfuse, Kiowa AK Richpie and Turbo Emperor finished fifth through eighth.
The biggest upset of all was in race 10. J. E. O’Donnell Kennel’s Kiowa Mink Mae (Heart Rumble*-Kiowa Mysticmink) derailed Flying Coal City a.k.a. “Coal Train.” When the box opened M’s Free Hand (7) quickly rushed to the lead. Flying Coal City (3) was forced on the rail by (5) Mink Mae and (6) RC Out Of Site. He was bumped in the first, which put him in seventh place heading into the backstretch. Way in the front of the race was M’s Free Hand on the inside and Mohican Mink Mae stalking him mid-track. RC Out Of Site was also closing hard in the race. It was a duel at the wire and Mink Mae won the photo over M’s Free Hand (Floyd & Porter). Her (Mae’s) winning time was 30.48-the fastest of the two qualifiers.
Mohican Mink Mae also returned hefty prices for those that backed the black female. She paid $49.20, $18.40 and $22.40. She headed the trifecta that paid $4,605.60. Mink Mae is one of two O'Donnell entries that are in the top four for trainer Jay Graham. The second through eighth place finishers were M’s Free Hand, RC Out Of Site, Kiowa Lazy Larry, USS Gazillionair, CTW Flight Plan, Flying Coal City and Kiowa Fly Army.
The semifinal rounds are Wednesday night and the top eight will advance to the October 2 stakes. The draw for the race is Monday night and will be posted on Vera’s News immediately following the draw. Complete point totals and more information at Vera's News.
