NGA News - Distance Classic upset for favorites in stakes qualifiers

NGA News -  The third round of the $80,000 Distance Classic saw favorites lose and streaks halted to rivals turning in incredible performances. Abernathy kennel's Magic Finch (Lonesome Cry x Bird A Flyin) was the best in the homestretch and snatched the win away from the bet favorite USS Gazillionair at the wire. Flying Masago, who won round two, poured it on at the end finishing third from sixth and Kiowa Sky Selma completed the superfecta. Hammered Tight, who broke on top and set the pace, finished fifth followed by Waubun Queen B, Hi Noon Maestro and RC Johnny Lobo in race six.

The stakes prelude highlighted earlier in the day on Round Up The Hounds radio show in WV, featured both undefeated entries Kelsos Ace High and Mohican Mink Mae. Midnight Light, who is a former Wheeling record holder, was highlighted on the show as the greyhound to take greyhounds down-and she did.

The nail-biter started with the two speedsters Mohican Mink Mae and Greta's Shanghai breaking one-two. The girls led all the way until the top of the homestretch where the gap was closing fast. The battle in the homestretch saw Midnight Light (Larking About* x Elysium) make her way through the middle of the field to score the top points for D'Arcy kennel. Second was Greta's Shanghai who put forth a tremendous effort followed by Kelsos Ace High coming back for third. Mae finished fourth. The race was amazingly close at the wire with only two and a half-lengths separating the first seven greyhounds. Fifth through eighth was Turbo Austin, Bow Timeless, Kiowa JSk Gustaf and M's Free Lance.

The semifinals for the race will be Wednesday. The draw will be Monday night and listed on Vera's News immediately following. The must see replays are available on the Derby Lane website.
