Two Wheeling-based greyhounds are heading West.
Word is A Ray Kennel's Dakotas Alene, currently sporting a seven race Grade AA win streak, and Wayne Ward Kennel's Kiowa WW Devera will be entered in the $60,000 Bluffs Run Open. The sprint stake opens Sept. 14, with a final on Saturday, Oct. 1.
The decisions to move the sprinters is directly related to action taken by Wheeling management to pull the plug on stake races during the 2011 racing season. A percentage of simulcast money have funded the Wheeling stake program in the past but management decided not to allocate those funds this year.
Dakotas Alene, a May 2008 greyhound out of Stan's Boy Flyer-Myokie Amber, has 16 wins, 6 seconds, 1 third and 1 fourth in 29 starts this year at Wheeling. She is owned by Jimmy King and trained by Joe Palmer.
Kiowa WW Devera, a March 2009 greyhound out of Kiowa Sweet Trey-Kiowa WW Time, has 13 wins, 8 seconds and 2 thirds in 30 Wheeling trips. Owned by Julia Ward and trained by Ron Otto, Devera opened his career at Bluffs Run in October 2010 before shipping to Wheeling.
