Gulf's Greyhound of the Week - Bay Oaks Jewel

Bay Oaks Jewel
Another youngster has taken the Texas Gulf Coast by storm and become one of the top sprinters at Gulf Greyhound Park. Bay Oaks Jewel from Libby Racing Kennels is currently on a three race winning streak, including two impressive top grade AA victories and earned the Greyhound of the Week honors.

The racing career of this 65-pound red female bred from Dodgem By Design – Legs Ocelot began successfully in May of 2011 graduating from the maiden class in her second official start and winning again in grade J on June 18 while landing on the paysheet in six out of eight starts. Bay Oaks Jewel was forced away from the racing scene until December but she picked up right where she left off, hitting the money and winning two of her next five races.
The journey up the grade ladder was completed with a grade A victory on February 11 in her typical come from behind fashion and did not waste any time showing she belonged with the elite competition that the Gulf has to offer winning her first grade AA contest on February 24. Except for one quick drop to grade A that started this recent string of victories, Bay Oaks Jewel has remained in top grade AA and really opened up eyes with her last two performances.

On Sunday afternoon April 1, despite drawing an unfavorable #6 post position, Bay Oaks Jewel broke second from the 550-yard starting box and won the race to the first turn. The rest, as they say, was history because Bay Oaks Jewel ran the race of her career sprinting off to a six-length victory eclipsing the 30-second barrier for the first time ever in 29.89 seconds.

The next opportunity for Bay Oaks Jewel occurred on Wednesday afternoon April 18 facing a field of recent winners including Last Call Cat of Tri-State Kennel, DLT Annika of Lingle Kennel and KB’s Layla of K-Rod Kennel. The post draw for Bay Oaks Jewel was fortunate this time drawing the #1 rail post and she took full advantage of the good fortune. Once again, Bay Oaks Jewel won the early race to the first turn over Last Call Cat and hit the accelerator pedal for her run down the backstretch. Bay Oaks Jewel left the grade AA field in the dust on the way to a nine-length victory in a time of 30.07 seconds.

This recent run of success for Bay Oaks Jewel has improved her 2012 record to 19/8-2-4-1 and career numbers totaling 29/10-6-5-3. Congratulations are in order for owner William Criss, trainer Cam Hawkins and this week’s star of the show Bay Oaks Jewel.
