West Palm Beach, Fl. - After beginning with a field of 64 Greyhounds, a remarkable five athletes will enter Wednesday afternoon’s third-round of qualifying for Palm Beach Kennel Club’s $20,000 Bob Balfe Puppy Stakes with a perfect two-for-two record.
In Race 10, Rader Racing Kennel’s #3 Minor Stroke (Rhythmless - Maza Mania) will go for the “ turkey” facing off against round two victor #6 Malakoff Diggins (Trent Lee - Essie Ecks Drive, Tru Palm Kennel) and the well-positioned #8 Preston (Kiowa Pretence - Kiowa Hail Happy, Royal Racing Team).
Race 12 will feature the undefeated qualifier #8 Turbo Edwin (Dodgem By Design - Greys Wind Gate, Rader Racing). Although Edwin is in his favorite post position, there are several excellent hard-trying entries in the field that could bring his streak to an end, such as Edwin’s kennel mate #1 Turbo Driven (Soprano Drive - Fuzzys Kennedy) and early speedsters #2 Flying Newton (Kiowa Sweet Trey - Flying Geneva, Steve Gilster) and #6 Crapshooterdance (Grenade - Flying Exquisite, Brindle Kennel).
In Race 14, last month’s $50,000 St. Patrick’s Invitational entry #5 WW All Starodell (Iruska All Star - WW’s Oprah, Steve Gilster Kennel) will have the definite advantage for the three-peat amongst his competition. But keep a keen eye out for the early speedster #6 Turbo Skeet (Bob’s Skeet - Turbo Wind Blown, Rader Racing) and the relative newcomer to the Palm Beach racing scene, #8 Nidett (WW Time Warp - Nevah, North Shore Kennel).
Race 15 will offer up the final two of the unconquered, the fleet-pawed #5 Greta’s Milano (Yahoo Omar - C Ya High Card, Rader Racing) and the pretty-sitting #8 Milam Pierce (Team Record* - Sheriff Morton, Steve Gilster). Possible foils could be qualifying round winners #2 Doinitforsundoll (Grenade - Flying Exquisite, Brindle Kennel) and #6 O Ya Reba (Stan’s Boy Flyer - Xtreme Fashion, Rader Racing).
Following Wednesday afternoon’s third round, the field will be halved to sixteen competitors, who will then advance to the fourth and final round Sunday afternoon, April 15, all vying for a slot in the final eight.
The 46th running of the $20,000 Bob Balfe Puppy Stakes will be contested Saturday afternoon, April 21.
The Puppy Stakes is named in honor of former Palm Beach Post Time sports columnist and great friend to Greyhound racing, Bob Balfe.
