Gulf's Greyhound of the Week - JSK Shannon Lea

JSK Shannon Lea
It has been a long journey for this week’s Greyhound of the Week, JSK Shannon Lea of Sambade Racing, LLC. The 57-pound brindle female bred from Lonesome Cry – BOW Dreamer possesses loads of early box speed and has blossomed into one of the top sprinters at Gulf Greyhound Park.

The story begins in November of 2011 and it was a bumpy road for JSK Shannon Lea during the last two months of the year until finally breaking loose and graduating from the maiden class in her eighth career start with an eye opening 11-length victory. A win in grade J arrived quickly three starts later on January 15, 2012 but then the competition proved to be difficult spending the next two months in grade C with only three second place finishes in her next ten outings.
Suddenly, JSK Shannon Lea hit `paydirt` winning a grade C race in box to wire fashion on March 14. After a troublesome first start in grade B, JSK Shannon Lea jumped right back on the winning track with wins in grades B and A in consecutive starts vaulting her into the Gulf’s elite grade AA class. Unfortunately, the stay did not last long with one third place finish in four starts and dropping back into grade A.

Despite this latest setback, JSK Shannon Lea proved she belonged with the best that the state of Texas had to offer knocking on the door on several occasions with three seconds and two third place finishes in her next eight grade A starts. With the beginning of June, came the fastest career efforts for JSK Shannon Lea winning a grade A contest by three lengths in 30.00 seconds and the crowning achievement of her first top grade AA victory in her next start on June 6 and a career best time of 29.98 seconds.

Early speed has always been the name of the game throughout the 20-year history of greyhound racing action at the Gulf. On Sunday afternoon June 17, JSK Shannon Lea flashed her skills once again with a box to wire effort. The 550-yard starting box was loaded with early speedballs for this duel but JSK Shannon Lea popped out of the #2 post to seize command of the race and lead every step of the way for a three length victory in a time of 30.25 seconds and her second top grade win in four starts.

On Saturday evening June 23, the next test for JSK Shannon Lea was facing the Libby Racing Kennels tag team duo of recent winner Atascocita Enok and potentially the best greyhound currently on the La Marque, Texas grounds, Kells Wild Bill. With the lucky #7 candy stripes, JSK Shannon Lea broke on top and cleared early speedball Baby I’m The Won of Lingle Kennel to assume a two-length advantage around the first turn. The lead for JSK Shannon Lea was under attack from Ponda’s Anna Mae of Tri-State Kennel, slowly diminishing as the two competitors continued their journey around the 550-yard course. JSK Shannon Lea dug down deep and held on by ½ length for back-to-back grade AA victories stopping the timer with an identical 30.25 second effort.

Congratulations are in order for owner Jerry Kramer, trainer Silvia Sambade and of course to JSK Shannon Lea for this week’s accomplishments.
