Gulf Greyhound Park’s top kennel in 2012, K-Rod Kennel trained by Cindy Unrein, brings one of the top performers on the Texas Gulf Coast to the Greyhound of the Week spotlight once again. The 59-pound red female bred from Dodgem by Design – Dancer Drive has shown historically throughout her career the she tends to win races in bunches. Similar to the heat of a Texas summer, Spry Derosa has `caught fire` during the month of July winning three out of her last four races, including two top grade AA contests this week to earn the weekly accolades.
For those of you that have followed the outstanding racing career of Spry Derosa, it is no secret that if she gets access to her preferred rail running position, watch out! After a fourth place finish on Friday evening July 13 from an outside #7 post, the post draw proved more kind for Spry Derosa with the #3 white blanketed post position for her next opportunity on Wednesday afternoon July 18. On paper, the grade AA featured tenth race resembled a `hot-box` field of competitors plum full of top grade winners. Spry Derosa of K-Rod Kennel rose to the challenge and blazed a trail home to a three-length victory in a time of 29.92 seconds. Spry Derosa positioned herself in a perfect second place striking position around the first turn behind early speedster JIT Gig Em of Bone Man Racing Kennel. With a strong move down the backstretch, Spry Derosa took control the contest and was home free for the rest of her journey.
Wrapping up the week with the grade AA seventeenth race finale Saturday evening July 21, the connections for Spry Derosa had to be pleased with the post draw of the Gulf’s red-hot leading post position, the red blanketed #1 post position. A similar field of top grade competitors stood in the way of Spry Derosa repeating her performance from Wednesday’s triumph but the fans supported Spry Derosa making her the 4/5 race favorite. As the 550-yard starting box opened, out came Spry Derosa quickly to the lead and taking control of the contest around the first turn with a one-length advantage. For the journey down the backstretch, Spry Derosa could easily hear the paw-pounding pressure of Dutch Laredo of Tri-State Kennel, who was also victorious on Wednesday afternoon, but remained one length in front. With the final turn for home, Spry Derosa hugged the rail, saying `not today fellas`, and drew clear for a three-length win in a time of 30.13 seconds and scoring back-to-back winning trips around the La Marque, Texas oval.
This latest hot streak for Spry Derosa has improved her 2012 record to 39/16-7-3-5 and remains in pursuit of the win leader, Kells Wild Bill of Libby Racing Kennels, trailing by two victories. With impressive career totals tallying 80/29-12-11-10, Spry Derosa continues to be one of the top greyhounds at Gulf Greyhound Park for owner Charter Kennel, Inc. and trainer Cindy Unrein of K-Rod Kennel.
