Gulf Greyhound's Greyhound of the Week - MW’s Morrigan

This week’s nominee for the Greyhound of the Week honors, MW’s Morrigan from D.Q. Williams Kennel, is definitely not a stranger to this spotlight. Since arriving from Naples-Fort Myers, Florida as their sprint champion, the 69-pound brindle daughter of Coldwater Torres – MW’s Star Towind has enjoyed a very successful campaign compiling a record of 42/22-9-6-2 around the Gulf Greyhound Park oval for trainer Craig Edwards and owner Mark Williams.

The start of this latest three race winning streak began on Sunday afternoon December 2 as the lone grade AA contest in race #10 could have been billed as a pay per view for Spry Derosa vs. MW’s Morrigan III. In round one on Thanksgiving night, both competitors were knocked out by longshot Slatex Slaton from Bone Man Racing Kennel. The second round on Wednesday afternoon November 28 resulted in a box to wire victory by Spry Derosa of K-Rod Kennel with MW’s Morrigan of D.Q. Williams Kennel in hot pursuit two lengths behind. So, with my best Michael Buffer impression, `Let’s Get Ready to Rumble!` With an explosive start from the #4 post position, the flash of the green blanket worn by MW’s Morrigan got the jump on the field to quickly take early command of the race. For those that are familiar with the history of MW’s Morrigan, once she gets the lead, it’s all over! In fact, MW’s Morrigan made a bold statement running away to win #20 by three lengths in a career best time of 29.75 seconds and even the score at one a piece.

The top grade thirteenth race on Saturday evening December 8 featured MW’s Morrigan sporting the lucky candy stripes of the #7 post seeking back to back victories. For those of you that follow MW’s Morrigan, she wants the rail and when the lid of the 550-yard starting box opened, MW’s Morrigan slashed immediately to her preferred running position knocking Gable Raven of Bone Man Racing Kennel out of the way. With a three-length advantage around the first turn, MW’s Morrigan would have to face one more challenge from D.Q. Williams’s kennelmate, Hot on Her Tail. The margin diminished to one length at the top of the stretch and continued to shrink as Hot on Her Tail was literally `hot on the tail` of MW’s Morrigan. The lights of the finish line arrived just in time for MW’s Morrigan winning race #21 of 2012 by the narrow margin of a neck ahead of Hot on Her Tail and completing the 1-2 sweep for trainer Craig Edwards.

The post position draw for MW’s Morrigan proved to be `mo’ betta` resulting in the white colors of the #3 post facing the difficult task of dueling with one of the Gulf’s win leaders this year from the #2 post, Kells Wild Bill of Libby Racing Kennels, on Friday evening December 14. A three way battle for the early lead materialized between Ultra Goldie of K-Rod Kennel, Primed to Win of D.Q. Williams Kennel and MW’s Morrigan. Taking advantage of the inside position, MW’s Morrigan bumped kennelmate Primed to Win out of the way and slipped underneath Ultra Goldie along the rail around the first turn to take control of the contest. With only Marquey and the finish line in sight, MW’s Morrigan held off a late challenge from Kells Wild Bill to win by 1½ lengths.
